Checkpoints 2023

In 2023 there will again be five mandatory Checkpoints. Each checkpoint is located at the very end of a DEAD END road, somwhere up in the mountains of eastern switzerland.

Sankt Martin – a tiny village at the very end of Calfeisen valley. The almost forgotten village consists of a small chapel, a water mill and several wooden cabins – more than 700 year old! This is where time seems to be standing still and you can feel nature, history, the deep blue lake and the majestic mountains!

Be aware – the road from “Gigerwald-Lake” to Sankt Martin is so narrow, that traffic is run alternating:

full hour until 20 past > in direction to Sankt Martin

half hour until 10 to > in direction to the lake

from 6 PM to 9 AM > free

Obermutten is located at 1863 meters high above the Schin Gorge. A tiny 14th century Walser village – a handful of ancient wooden houses in the middle of a green meadow. Even the chapel in the village is made of wood. The high plateau offers incredible views of Lenzerheide, the Albula Valley and the Beverin National Park. Cakes and stamps are served directly at Gasthaus Post.

The way up to Alp Nurdagn takes you to over 2340 above sea level. Cheered on by the whistles of the marmots, you climb a lonely little road up the mountain and you have a magnificent view of the mountains of the Beverin Nature Parc. The moor landscape around Alp Anarosa is one of the highest alpine pastures in Switzerland. The last stretch from the Tguma car park is no longer asphalted, but it can also be used with a racing bike. The newly restored alpine hut offers local delicacies and, if required, places to sleep.

The Bischofalp (1650 m) high above Elm offers an incredible view of the UNESCO World Heritage Tectonic Arena Sardona with the Martinsloch. The last two kilometers to the cozy mountain restaurant are on a well-maintained gravel road. At the top a well-deserved fresh piece of cake awaits!

Kamor (1722 m) is one of the best climbs in the Alpstein. From Rüthi in the Rhine Valley, almost 1300 meters in altitude are climbed over 13 wonderful kilometers. The view gets better and better with every meter gained. Passing small Alps, there are some gravel sections in between. But these are well maintained and the really steep parts are paved.
The real highlight comes shortly before the summit – the view over to the Alpstein mountains is overwhelming. On the last few meters of altitude, the somewhat more well-known neighbor of Kamor also shows up – the Hohe Kasten.
There are different ways to get to the Kamor. The road from Rüthi or over the Montlinger Schwamm – here, however, there is an additional gravel part.

The ascent from the Ruhsitz restaurant is not recommended! This is an alpine trail and not nearly rideable in either direction!
